LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Belfry Pirates traveled to Louisville during spring break and dropped a pair of games.
On Monday, the Pirates lost to 7-3 to DeSales (Louisville) and on Tuesday they were shutout by Martha Layne Collins 6-0.
In the first game, Belfry’s Keaton Taylor walked, then stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on a RBI groundout to third by Reed Williamson.
DeSales tied it in the bottom of the 1st frame as Andrew Beckmann was safe on error by Williamson, but was thrown out stealing by Zack Francisco to Sean Hurley. Then Daniel Breedlow singled to left, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Breedlow scored on grounder to short by Clint Thompson (RBI).
In the second, with one out, DeSales saw Hollinsworth get a walk, he stole second, then went to third base on a balk to with two out. Trenton Saylor got a single to left and drove in a run, then James Davenport walked, Beckman was safe on fielder’s choice. With the bases loaded, Saylor scored on wild pitch and Breedlow smacked an RBI single to center.
DeSales got two more runs in the 4th inning and another in the 5th to pad the lead. Taylor got the loss on the hill for the Pirates.
In the 7th inning, Belfry cut into the lead with two runs, but it wasn’t enough. With one out, Zac Fields doubled to right center, Madison Ghormley clubbed an RBI double to left center and Dustin Jewell’s RBI single to right brought in a run.
On Tuesday, Martha Layne Collins scored three in the 3rd inning, two in the 5th frame and one in the 6th for their six runs.
Belfry got two hits from Reed Williamson, both singles, and a base hit by Joey Duty. That was it for the Pirate’s offense in the game. Zac Fields took the loss on the mound.
