PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Hundreds of eastern Kentucky residents between the ages of 13 and 35 will showcase their talent in closed auditions for the Country Music Highway Road to Fame contest.
“The talent found in eastern Kentucky has been clearly shown throughout the 2012 competition,” said Bernard Porter, one of the ‘Road to Fame’ Judges. “We look forward to discovering who the next Country Music Highway ‘Road to Fame’ winner will be for 2013.”
In its second year, the contest will kick off with an audition at 1 p.m. on April 6 at the Hampton Inn in Pikeville. Auditions will also be held at 1 p.m. on April 7 at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park in Prestonsburg, at Fannin Motors at 1 p.m. on April 27 in Ashland and at 1 p.m. on April 28 at the Ramada Inn in Paintsville, providing an opportunity for local artists to showcase their musical talents.
The contest was established last year to promote U.S. 23 as the Country Music Highway by discovering the “next generation of talented artists from the area” and establishing a local arts education fund. Road to Fame judges will select 80 contestants who will then advance in the competition to four qualification rounds, which will be judged by Music Row executives from Nashville, Tn., scheduled to take place on May 3, 4, 11 and 12.
Virgie resident Logan Hall, a former coal miner, won the competition in 2012. Teenager Whitley Mullins of Hazard earned the 2nd place prize; Bronson Bush of Raceland and JoLeigh (made up of sisters Mikey Jo Pack Hall and Teddi Leigh Frasure of McDowell) tied for third place.
The winner and the top 10 finalists will act as ambassadors representing the Country Music Highway at various events throughout the year.
The contest is open to residents were born in or are living in counties near the Country Music Highway, including Letcher, Pike, Floyd, Johnson, Lawrence, Boyd, Greenup Harlan, Perry, Knott, Magoffin, Morgan, Elliott, Carter, Martin and Lewis counties.
Competitors must complete a contest entry form and release form, available for download online at http://cmhRoadToFame.com. The forms may be turned in along with a $25 registration fee on the day of audition. Proof of age is required.
