NAUGATUCK – The Tug Valley Panthers picked up a nice win on Senior Night Saturday as they downed visiting Logan 57-44.
The game was close in the first half and the Wildcats led 24-22 heading into the dressing room at the half.
Tug Valley, ranked No. 1 in Class A, outscored the Class AAA Wildcats 10-5 in the third period and 25-15 in the final quarter to pull away.
Many Panther fans were upset on what they thought was an intentional foul on Austin Brewer who was going in for a dunk in the second half.
“The incidents at the end of the game really took away from a great game. Both teams were battling and it was a one point game when the technical happened. And it really changed the game. You get down 5-6 points to this Tug team with only 4-5 minutes left and you’re in trouble, they just don’t lose games at the end,” said Logan coach Mark Hatcher.
“It was a battle and a very competitive game,” said Panther coach Garland “Rabbit” Thompson. “Logan played well – especially in the first half.”
Once again Mikey Newsome led the Panthers in scoring with 20 points including a couple of his patented long 3-pointers. Brewer added 12 and seven assists. Thomas Baisden had nine points and seven rebounds. Aaron Muncy and Hayden Sturgell each scored six points and Corey Dillon added four.
“I think we stepped up and played better defensively in the second half. I thought Mikey (Newsome) had one of his best games of the year. Not only on offense, but defensively too. When Austin got in foul trouble, I think he stepped up his game,” Thompson added. “This was a typical Logan-Tug Valley game. If it wasn’t a rivalry, I feel like it is one now.”
Zakery Miller, Andrew Reynolds and Chase Preston each scored 12 points for the Logan Wildcats.
The Panthers made 45 percent of their shots making 23-51, including 2-5 from behind the arc. TVHS was 9-15 at the free throw line for 60 percent.
Logan shot a cold 36 percent from the floor making 15-32, but fired in 9-22 from 3-point range for 41 percent. They were 5-12 at the foul line for 42 percent.
Tug Valley travels to Huntington tonight for their final regular season game of the season.
