GOODY, Ky. – The Belfry Pirates won the rematch over Mingo Central Saturday, nipping the visitors 79-76 at the BHS gym.
The same thing happened last season. The two teams split their two regular season games with the Miners winning at home and the Pirates getting some revenge by winning at home later in the season.
It was Senior Night for the Pirates as 12th graders Tony Messer, Brett Charles, Sean Hurley and Josh Robinson were honored prior to the game.
“This was a great win for our team. We challenged our seniors and they responded. The win takes us into district tourney play with a lot of confidence,” Pirates coach Randy Casey said. The seniors played their last regular season game of their careers at the BHS gym.
Messer, a 6-5 beast in the paint, had 24 points and 12 rebounds for the Pirates. Shooting guard Sean Hurley led the team with 24 points, many from long range. Robinson had 16 and Charles 10 as all four seniors got into double figures for Belfry. Nick West had four and Cameron Johnson added two for BHS.
Senior point guard Austin Banks led the Miners with 21 points and he dished out 11 assists. Junior guard Julius Hatcher IV was next with 16 points. Junior forward Alex “Booger” Lee was next with 12 points and eight rebounds. Senior shooting guard Matt Lester fired in 15 points, all on 3-pointers. Jason West came off the bench to score five for Mingo Central, while Marqus Cunningham battled foul trouble and scored only four points, but he pulled down six rebounds in limited action. Freshman guard Stevie Hammond contributed three.
“We played hard, but I think we just ran out of gas,” Mingo Central coach Brad Napier said. “We didn’t have the same intensity on defense that we’ve had. It was our seventh game in 12 days. We didn’t have much left in the tank. We were a step slow and it seemed like we were playing in quicksand.”
“Belfry shot the ball well. Give them credit, “ Napier said. “We were coming off two emotional games this week. “
Mingo Central is now 12-9 on the season and travels to Wayne tonight and Herbert Hoover Thursday for their final two regular season games. Both of the contests are Cardinal Conference games and are also makeup games postponed because of the inclement weather.
Belfry now hosts the 60th District tourney and will play the winner of Phelps-Pike Central on Wednesday at around 8 p.m. They are assured a spot in the 15th Region tournament at the Expo Center ,win or lose.
