NEWTOWN – The Lady Rebels of Tolsia defeated the Lady Miners of Mingo Central 43 to 35 Thursday night at the MCHS gym.
Turnover plagued both teams in the first half as Mingo Central committed 15 and Tolsia nine in the first two quarters of play.
Mingo Central led 12-6 after the first quarter, but did not make a basket in the second and the Lady Rebels tied the game at 18-18 at halftime. The Miners did convert six free throws in the second quarter to keep the game close.
Danielle Browning scored seven first half points to lead the Lady Miners, while Jordan Presley had six to lead Tolsia in the first 16 minutes of play.
Tolsia outscored Mingo Central 15-8 in the third quarter behind 10 points from Savannah Winnett to take a 33-26 lead heading into the final quarter.
Mingo Central cut the lead to 35-30 on a shot by Ashley Curry with 3:00 minutes left in the game. However, they were never able to get over any closer and the Lady Rebels held on to win.
Both teams were extremely cold from the field. Mingo Central only hit 24 percent, while Tolsia shot 22 percent for the game.
Mingo Central was 11-18 at the charity stripe for 61 percent, while Tolsia was 11-19 for 59 percent.
The Lady Miners ended up with 22 turnovers in the game, while Tolsia committed 16 miscues.
The difference in the game was from 3-point land. Tolsia hit more threes, while Mingo only connected on two.
Ashley Curry led Mingo Central with 12 points and she pulled down 11 rebounds. Curry also had four blocked shots. Browning followed with nine points. Chrissy Farmer had four points and four assists.
Winnett led Tolsia with 16 points, while Krista Maynard had 11 and Presley finished with six. Both Winnett and Maynard had a double-double. Winnett pulled down a game high 15 rebounds, while Maynard had 11 boards.
MCHS coach Don Taylor was not happy with his teams’ performance.
“We just have to work harder and obtain some focus. We were 11-45 from the floor and lose by eight. When you shoot that bad and turn the ball over that much the other team doesn’t have to beat you - you beat yourself,” Taylor said after the game.
They now have a record of 3-6 and will travel to Belfry on Thursday, January 10.
Tolsia is now 6-2 on the season. This is the second time they have beaten the Lady Miners. The Rebels are in the same regional as Mingo Central, so the two teams could face each other again come tournament time.
