NEWTOWN – The Poca Dots made a point against the Mingo Central Miners last Friday night that they are a Cardinal Conference team that can make some noise come March.
Poca gave Mingo Central its first home loss of the season 56-46 at the MCHS gym.
“We didn’t play with any energy. We were flat,” said Miners coach Brad Napier. “We had a couple of good practices prior to this game. I’m not sure why we played like we did – but you have to give credit to Poca.”
The Dots played a slow, methodical style of offense and the Miners fell right into that trap, according to Napier.
“We played their pace most of the game,” he added. “We never were able to get a good run on them.”
Late in the game it looked as though the Miners might have been able to shift the momentum when senior Austin Banks made a steal and could have had an uncontested layup that would have cut the deficit to only two, but he was whistled for a foul.
Instead of cutting into the lead, Poca increased their advantage. The Miners were then forced to foul and the Dots were able to convert a lot of free throws down the stretch to pull away.
Banks led the Miners with 17 points and he dished out seven assists. Marqus Cunningham was the only other player in double figures with 12 point. He pulled down 11 rebounds. Matt Lester added six, while Alex Lee and Stevie Hammond each chipped in four, while Jason West scored three points.
Noah Frampton led Poca with 15 points, while Matt Chandler had 13 and Cameron Cottrill scored 12 for coach Allen Osborne’s squad.
Mingo Central does not have to wait very long to try and get some revenge against Poca. They travel to Poca Friday night to take on the Dots again in the conference matchup. The Miners will then travel to River View on Tuesday, January 8.
