NEWTOWN – The Lady Miners picked up their first win of the season as they defeated visiting Lincoln County 67-55 Thursday night at the MCHS gym.
Ashley Curry, a 5-11 sophomore center, scored 18 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the way for Mingo Central.
Senior point guard Chrissy Farmer scored 10 points dished out eight assists and had five steals for coach Don Taylor’s squad.
“We need to get more consistent,” Taylor said. “We still need to cut down on our turnovers.”
Taylor said his squad needs to brush up on their fundamentals. “We need to block out better under the boards,” he added. “We have to stop making bad passes.”
The Lady Miners only hit 21 of 38 free throws for 55 percent, something Taylor knows they need to work on. They shot around 40 percent from the floor.
Danielle Browning added eight points and Miranda Evans also chipped in eight for the Lady Miners.
Mingo Central led 35-31 at the half, but outscored Lincoln County 22-13 in the final quarter to pull away.
Taylor Lucas led the Lady Panthers with 12, while Shuanna Thompson added 11 for the visitors.
Lincoln County was also cold at the charity stripe connecting on only 16 of 38 for 42 percent.
In the junior varsity game, LCHS beat MCHS 53-41.
Caitlin Cantrell had 10 points to lead the JV squad, while Kieara Hammond added eight.
