SOUTH WILLIAMSON, Ky. — Although official reports have not yet been released from Pikeville Post 9 of the Kentucky State Police (KSP), basic information was provided to the Daily News by the agency concerning an alleged beating that occurred on Oct. 9 inside Muncy’s Appalachian Tobacco, located near the Appalachian Plaza, that has resulted in the death of one individual.
Millard Mann, 55, of McCarr, Ky., was reportedly inside the South Williamson business in the early morning hours of Oct. 9 when, according to law enforcement, he was allegedly attacked and beaten by a black male that was accompanied by other individuals. Information regarding what stemmed the altercation is not being released at this time, but reports do state that Mann was transported to a local hospital and was then air-lifted to Cabell Huntington Hospital where he passed away the next morning from complications of the injuries he sustained during the beating.
KSP Communications Officer Shaun Little stated that Detective Kevin Newsome is overseeing the death investigation, and will be meeting with Commonwealth Attorney Rick Bartley when all details are gathered and will then decide what charges and options may be pursued against the assailants.
“This is an ongoing investigation and we will not be charging anyone until all details and facts surrounding the crime are gathered in and reviewed, video surveillance recordings are subpoenaed and testimonies from eye witnesses are taken,” stated Little. “Det. Newsome is very thorough with any investigation he heads up and this one is definitely not an exception. We will be releasing information to the public and to the media as soon as the case is presented to the Commonwealth Attorney.”
“In the meantime, we ask for your patience and understanding in this matter.”
Mann, a lifetime resident of the Tug Valley area, was formerly employed as a coal miner and leaves behind a wife, two daughters and numerous other family members. He was laid to rest on Monday.
