Melvin Workman, 89, of Lenore, passed away September 19, 2012, at his home in Laurel Creek.
He was born December 18, 1923, at Boyd County, Ky., the son of the late Perry and Sarah Ball Workman.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Emma Stewart Workman; brothers, Lewis Ball, Paul, Oliver and Everett Workman; stepbrother, Jimmy Urconis; sisters, Sarah Jane Miller, Verna Thompson, Betty Jo Workman and Ollie Workman; stepsisters, Dorothy Fernandez; and half-sister Alice Avanelle; and one grandchild.
Melvin was a retired coal miner having worked more than 43 years in the coal mines.
His survivors include sons, Melvin Jr. (Bonnie) Workman of Lenore, Milton D. (Alice) Workman of Chattaroy, and Michael D. (Lillian) Workman of New Tazewell, Tenn.; daughter, Helen (Rudolph) Varney of Chattaroy, brothers, Daniel Workman of Trace Creek; stepbrothers, Charles Urconis of South Carolina and Frank Urconis of Lenore; sisters, Francis Honaker of Belfry, Ky., Mary Irene Vatter of Indianapolis, Ind., Lucy Whitt of Naugatuck, and Judy Faye Osborne of Indianapolis; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. In his later years Melvin spent most of his time with his adopted family whom he loved dearly, Bill and Susie Sexton and special grandchildren, Tary “Baby T” Sexton, Sarah K. Sexton and Kista Sexton.
Funeral services will be held at the Chafin Funeral Home Saturday September 22, at 1 p.m. with Elder Thomas Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Sexton Family Cemetery at Laurel Creek. Visitation will be at the funeral home chapel Friday evening from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. with services starting at 7 p.m. Pallbearers will be friends and family.
