COAL RUN — A recent spate of robberies continued Monday, when a Pike County convenience store was robbed.
Kentucky State Police report that a white male walked into the Cowpen Double Kwik around 11 p.m., Monday, brandishing a firearm and demanding money. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, camoflauge mask, white tennis shoes, blue jeans and gloves.
After receiving an undisclosed amount of money, the man fled the store in an unknown direction.
KSP Det. Jason Merlo is investigating the crime.
The robbery is just the latest in a string that began with a pair of bank robberies last week. A masked man robbed the Allen branch of Citizens National Bank on Aug. 20, and two men robbed the South Williamson branch of U.S. Bank the following day.
Police are puzzled over what is behind the recent surge in crime.
“You can put it on the economy or whatever, but there’s no way of really knowing,” said KSP Public Information Officer Shaun Little.
Police are asking anyone with information on any of the heists to report it to KSP Post 9, in Pikeville, at (606) 433-7711 or (800) 222-5555.
